Field of specialization, studies, work experience:

Dr. Didem DANIS was born in Istanbul in 1973 and works currently as associate professor at Galatasaray University, Sociology Department. She received her PhD from EHESS (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris) in 2008 with a thesis on the Iraqi transit migrants’ social networks in Istanbul. She studied political science and sociology at Boğaziçi University (Istanbul), and did her MA in Sociology at Middle Eastern Technical University (Ankara). She stayed at Malmö University, Sweden as a visiting Ph.D. in 2002-2003. She has taught as a visiting professor at various universities in France. Her research interests include international migrations, urban sociology and social demography. Her interests on international migrations concentrates on state-migrant relationships, migration politics, migrants’ social networks and transnationalism. She is also focusing on the interactions between the cities and the migrants, mechanisms of hospitability, as well as the role of local actors in the refugee reception and integration. She has published various articles, book chapters and edited three volumes on migration issues. She is the founding chair of the Association for Migration Research (GAR).
