Nikolia Apostolou

Field of specialization, studies, work experience:

Nikolia Apostolou is a multimedia-journalist in Greece. For the last decade, she has been writing, doing video, and producing documentaries based out of Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey for media such as: The Associated Press, BBC, The New York Times, PBS, USA Today, Deutsche Welle, Al-Jazeera, The Economist, Newsweek, Hakai Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, Berlin Policy Journal, Global Post, and many others.

With a group of eight journalists across Europe, North Africa, and Turkey, Nikolia also researched “The Criminal Migrant Shipping Network” on how cargo ships are used to transfer big numbers of refugees from Turkey to Greece and Italy.

She has also directed numerous short documentaries.

Nikolia earned her Master of Science in Digital Media, at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York. She won scholarships from the Fulbright Institution and the Gerondelis Institution to study at Columbia. She earned her Bachelor’s in Journalism, at Panteion University, Athens, Greece and won a scholarship from the State Fund of Scholarships for best performance during her junior year. She also earned a Niarchos fellowship at Columbia University for the summer investigative reporting and a fellowship from the Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma on Early Childhood Development.

Description of prior teaching/training activities:

Taught a semester-long Multimedia Journalism workshop at the Department of Communication, Media and Culture at Panteion University, with Professor Marina Rigou.

  • The Island of The Refugees, Vice News. Produced, directed, and shot the 40-minute-long documentary about life on Europe's Gateway, the Greek island of Lesbos island.
  • Demokratia. For three months filmed a candidate of Golden Dawn, the neo-nazi party in Greece, through his election campaign. The first time anyone ever got so close to Golden Dawn.
